What’s in a Name?

I named the company after Matsuo Basho, one of the masters of Japanese Haiku, and after Henry David Thoreau's classic book Walden. The name is personal and authentic to me; as a poet myself and because I have always resonated with the lessons Thoreau wrote about in Walden: independence, connection to nature, and focusing on what matters most in life.

Basho had the ability to capture deep thoughts and observations through just a few words.
One of the goals of our work at Basho Walden is to help others articulate what matters most to them and to spend the time to dig deep enough to discover what that is.

Walden the book is a powerful reminder on the importance of taking time out to reflect and observe. Our work at Basho Walden helps our clients slow down, and invest in figuring out what is working and not working in their personal and professional lives and perhaps charting a new course with clarity and focus.

I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach,
and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived.

-Henry David Thoreau

About Us

John Brice

I have always been interested in the question of how we become who we are.

My career has taken me through entrepreneurship, finance, coaching, advisory work and a variety of businesses and creative pursuits. Along the way, I've had the privilege of sitting across the table from hundreds of people navigating moments of consequence.

I've come to believe that the most interesting work is rarely just about business. It's about the person doing the work.

What they value.
What they fear.
What they're becoming.
And whether the life they're building still feels like their own.

As the youngest of five, I grew up in a home that always had something going on. I like to manage multiple priorities, including co-running our household, looking after two school age children, and helping run our two businesses.

I lead Basho’s brand and operations. I am involved in all client engagements and serve as a producer for the Moments That Matter Podcast.

Born in Brazil and a native of Southern California, I am the happiest somewhere warm and beautiful. I enjoy connecting with people, building deep lasting relationships and helping others get closer to the lives they have always wanted.
